Some light reading for you about Home Reading. Reading a lot is the best way to improve reading. Children are never too old to be read to - find a cozy place and enjoy some special books together. When children love re-reading their favourite book, embrace it!

This week has been a very special week in the Catholic life of our school.
On Tuesday, we celebrated Shrove Tuesday which is the last Tuesday before Lent begins. One of our Catholic annual traditions here at St Francis Catholic Primary School is to cook our students and families pancakes, in the morning, before school. Thank you to our amazingly supportive P&F team keep this wonderful celebration alive.
In the past, there were foods that Christians would not eat during Lent. These included meat, fish, eggs, fats and milky food. To ensure no food was wasted, families would have a feast on Shrove Tuesday to use up all the foods that would not keep until the end of the 40 days of Lent. Today, we celebrate this tradition by cooking and sharing a meal of pancakes.
Students also participated in a prayer celebration focusing on ‘Almsgiving - Social Action,’ caring for our common home through the catholic social teachings and what our school community can do to help those in need within our local community. Students wrote Lenten commitments which were then burned and prepared for a blessing.
Wednesday marked the beginning of the season of Lent, a special time when we are invited to draw closer to God and prepare for Easter. During the 40 days of Lent, Christians are invited to show self-discipline through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Year 3 to 6 classes attended the Ash Wednesday Mass at St Peter Chanel Church. The burned Lenten commitments were blessed and placed on our foreheads in the sign of a cross. The Prep to Year 2 classes also received their Ash Wednesday cross during their special Liturgy.
This Friday, our staff is attending the Bishop’s Inservice Day. The theme for this year’s Bishop’s Inservice Day is Social Action and Justice. Our teachers will enter into a dialogue about Integral Ecology and the critique of Anthropocentrism in Laudato Si’, the Corporal Acts of Mercy, and the critical role of social action and justice in Catholic Education.
