Term 1 Week 5
Weekly 5 with Leadership
From Kylie's desk - APC
One of the best ways to improve a skill is to have a positive mindset. This especially applies to Mathematics. Our teachers encourage students to push through the learning pit and use a growth mindset to achieve success. There are many Mathematical Mindsets that we focus on at St Francis Catholic Primary School.
The following message is displayed on class screens currently and it refers to the proven fact that EVERYONE CAN ACHIEVE MATHS TO HIGH LEVELS. Jo Boaler is an American Mathematics professor who undertakes continual action research and this is her Number 1 message. More information can be found on youcubed.com
The Learning Pit (James Nottingham, 2024) has many wonderful images that help our students understand what to do when learning is a challenge. The link below has a great page for parents to help their young people:
1. Take a positive attitude toward challenge
2. Be more prepared for the highs and lows of learning
3. Move from information to understanding - learn through doing, not just listening
Number Talks
Most Mathematical lessons begin with a high-yield strategy, like a Number Talk. These are often images that allow open-ended discussion between students. Below are two examples, the one on the left could be for Prep/Yr 1 and the right could be for middle/upper primary. You can see how these images would certainly promote some interesting discussions.
Uniform Reminder
From the Sport desk
Save the date: Tuesday 19th March from 9 AM on the school oval.
Children run the Cross Country event in their age groups to earn points for their house. Parents are welcome to come along and cheer.
Each lap around the whole school is approximately 1 km. Preps and Year 2 run one lap. Year 3 and 10-year-olds run 2 laps and 11-12 year olds run 3 laps. The top 4 runners in the 10-12 years' races may compete at the Port Curtis trials next term, providing they run the whole track continuously.
Medallions are for the first three places in 9-12 years.
