Term 1 Week 7
Weekly 5 with Leadership
Weekly 5 with Leadership - APC
As the Assistant Principal in Curriculum, this week I would like to provide an overview of some of the teaching and learning, here at St Francis Catholic Primary School.
The Australian Curriculum (version 9.0) identifies and organises the essential knowledge, understanding and skills that students should learn in 8 learning areas:
- English
- Maths
- Science
- HASS (comprising of Civic and Citizenship, Economics & Business, Geography and History)
- The Arts (Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music and Visual Arts)
- Technologies (comprising of Design & Technologies, and Digital Technologies) and, if available
- Languages.
As a Catholic school in the Rockhampton Diocese, St Francis also includes the learning area of
- Religion. This is an assessed subject, as all others. Children are not assessed on their faith but on the curriculum covered in their short learning cycles.
The links below provide an overview of the Australian Curriculum learning in year-level bands.
Some of the learning areas above are taught by Specialist teachers:
- The Arts: Music, Dance, and Drama: Mrs Sharyn Dicker and Visual Arts: Mrs Melissa Hartsorn
- Physical Education: 30 min/week Miss Rachel Clarke. To meet the remaining Physical Education time allocation, Friday afternoon sports are provided on a rotational basis for years 3-6. Prep to Year 2 undertake a gross motor program daily.
- Unfortunately, we received a late resignation from our previous LOTE teacher and were unable to fill the position for 2024. Many schools experience difficulty filling LOTE positions.
Some extra-curricular options available at St Francis during lunch times are:
- Singing Club
- Robotics
- Art Club
- Chess Club
After school private lessons are available in:
- Piano lessons with Ms Li Ping He
- Singing lessons with Ms Joanna Turich
Instrumental Band sessions are commencing in Term 2 for current instrumental music students with an information letter being distributed this week. St Francis Catholic Primary is collaborating with St John the Baptist in seeking an Instrumental Music tutor for individual/small group lessons.
Please reach out if you have further questions,

From the Sports Desk:
The first of three carnivals for the year is approaching. Each competitor receives a point for their house. As usual on Tuesdays, students wear their house shirt. They may choose to wear different shorts/joggers for the event and then change back into school uniform after their run.
Students are preparing by running the course during PE and Brain Breaks. Before-school skipping has started and is a wonderful way to improve fitness and core strength. Why not join Tannum Sands Park Run and head to Canoe Point each Saturday from 7AM for a wonderful free community event?
Parents are welcome to come along on Tuesday 19th March from 9AM to support. We ask that you only take photos of your own children at the event, due to media consent.
The top four boys/girls in the 9-12 year age groups will be eligible for Port Curtis Cross Country if they run the whole course.
